Fall

Fall is fabulous in God's Country! With the foliage in full effect, the colorful mountains are quite a sight to see. Whether you explore on the roads or on the trails, you'll see fall foliage at its finest. Here are the top 5 fall activities in "God's Country":

  1. Scenic Overlooks - Potter County is home to limitless scenic overlooks - some established and some that you'll just discover on your own. Take a leisurely drive and stop along to way to snap photos of some of the amazing views you'll only find here in God's Country. With mountains painted in vibrant reds, oranges and yellows, here's no better time to experience our scenic overlooks than fall!
  2. Drive the Potter County Nature Loop - The Nature Loop encompasses the heritage communities of Coudersport, Austin and Galeton. Each town has intriguing remnants of a unique history just waiting for you to explore. Along the way, stop at scenic overlooks that host views from above of Potter County's fantastic fall foliage and untouched, unspoiled and untamed terrain.
  3. Hunting - Hunting is a tradition so deeply ingrained in this area that it has been passed down from one generation to the next for over a century. The abundant wildlife and hundreds of acres of public land make Potter County a sportsman's paradise for all the hunting seasons. In recent years, in addition to deer hunting, Potter County has become a growing destination for those hunting black bear, turkey, grouse, squirrel, rabbit and woodcock. Hunters are encouraged to bring their sons and daughters when they are old enough to participate in the hunt. Deep in the woods, with no distractions, families can rediscover each other. It can be a priceless experience.
  4. Hiking - The Susquehannock Trail System (STS) is an 85-mile loop "built by hikers for hikers" that meanders through the 262,000 acre Susquehannock State Forest spanning from Denton Hill to just south of the county border. Along the way, you'll visit Ole Bull State Park, Patterson State Park, Hammersley Wild Area and the Cherry Springs Fire Tower. The trail links old Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) fire trails, abandoned railroad grades and logging roads. Not quite ready for the full 85 miles? The trail offers several shorter segments and loops as well. Those wishing to conquer the full trail should allow a week to do so. Upon completing the trail, you can apply for the Circuit Hiker Award.
  5. Motorcycling - The scenic, winding, open roads of God's Country are a perfect match for a motorcycle and its rider. Cover the county on the 116-mile Susquehannock Loop Tour that hits the historic and charming towns of Coudersport, Oleona, Cross Fork and Austin along the way. Tour the northern parts of the county on the 77-mile Continental Divide Tour passing through Coudersport, Gold, Genesee and Hebron Center. Or, take a leisurely ride along scenic Route 6, passing through Roulette, Coudersport, Sweden Valley and Galeton. Along the way, visit a variety of unique shops and restaurants.
